I’ve been having many a discussion recently about community and its values! Along with being involved about Shout About It, a community built around the concert photographer, I have also been introduced to a local project called Nusic, this Nottingham based program is set up to showcase local talent and help them get a voice, in the same way I have been helping Georgia and co at Shout About It let the photographer have a voice, Nusic is doing a similar thing with musicians and podcasts! Its great I love it!
So the other week I had a night off (I vaguely remember what they feel like now), however I like to spend time off developing my skills further and having a play with new settings or techniques. It’s the best way to develop as a photographer in my opinion. Instead of sitting on YouTube watching epic fail montages, I got in touch which the guys at Nusic who were hosting The Future Sound of Nottingham Finals, a great competition which would see the winner perform at the cities very own Splendour festival.
The guys let me come down to effectively have a play, but on arrival I found myself back in work mode, the organisers had been let down last-minute by their official photographer (not a problem, it happens to us all, such is life) and they needed someone to cover….. I think you can tell where this is going….
Turning opportunity into business and I didn’t really have to do anything, luckily all that hard work in the past, with a touch of luck came in to place and I found myself shooting again, for another festival.
Its having that flexibility and knowledge in knowing you can be called upon at any time. The same reason I generally have a camera with me or at least somewhere nearby, if the scouts taught me something, it was to be prepared, and luckily on this occasion I delivered and the artists as well as organisation were over the moon with the images.
